PET Resin IV0.8

What Is PET Resin IV0.8?

PET Resin IV0.8 refers to PET resin with an intrinsic viscosity stably in the range of 0.80±0.015 dL/g, which belongs to the medium-high viscosity grade. IV0.8 corresponds to a number-average molecular weight of about 31,500–36,700. The moderate molecular chain length avoids insufficient strength of low-IV and processing difficulties of high-IV. It is a core grade in the bottle-grade and general molding fields, precisely balancing melt strength, processing performance and cost, and is widely applicable to mineral water bottles, ordinary beverage bottles, food containers and general thermoforming scenarios.

Core Performance Advantages of IV0.8 PET Chips

Balanced Processing Performance

Moderate melt fluidity. No excessive temperature or pressure is required during preform injection molding, which reduces energy consumption and equipment wear, while avoiding melt fracture of low-IV grades.

Blow molding and thermoforming stability. The bottle wall has good thickness uniformity, excellent explosion resistance and drop resistance, suitable for medium and high-depth molding needs.

Wide processing window. High fault tolerance in drying, injection molding and blow molding processes, suitable for large-scale continuous production, which can effectively improve production efficiency and reduce scrap rate.

Outstanding Mechanical and Barrier Properties

Balanced strength and toughness. Tensile strength and impact resistance meet the requirements of conventional packaging, PET preforms are not easy to be brittle, and finished bottles are resistant to transportation and extrusion.

Good transparency. Low acetaldehyde content and high whiteness make the finished water bottles crystal clear, which can enhance the visual effect of packaging and improve product grade.

Main Application Scenarios of IV0.8 PET Resin

Bottle Packaging

Mineral water bottles and purified water bottles. Low cost, high transparency and lightweight, suitable for high-speed blow molding lines, which is the most mainstream application of IV0.8 PET Resin.

Ordinary beverage bottles (non-carbonated). Such as tea drinks, fruit juices and functional drinks, which balance strength and barrier properties and meet the requirements of normal temperature storage.

Cosmetics bottles and daily chemical bottles. High transparency and low odor, suitable for high-end packaging of lotions, shampoos and perfumes.

Thermoforming Products

Food trays, lunch boxes: Suitable for general thermoforming, such as fruit trays and fast food boxes, balancing strength and molding efficiency.

Blister packaging: Inner trays for electronic products, toys and stationery, with good impact resistance to protect finished products from damage during transportation and storage.

Industrial sheets: General APET sheets, used in scenarios with low strength requirements such as nameplates and decorative panels.

FAQs of PET Chips IV0.8

1. Is IV0.8 PET Resin suitable for food contact applications?

Yes, IV0.8 PET Resin is widely used in food contact applications, such as mineral water bottles, food containers and condiment bottles. To ensure food safety, it must meet the relevant food contact standards of different regions. When purchasing, it is necessary to ask the PET resin supplier to provide COA for each batch to confirm that the acetaldehyde content (≤1.0 μg/g) and other indicators meet the standards.

2. Can IV0.8 PET Resin be used for carbonated beverage bottles?

It is not recommended to use IV0.8 PET Resin for carbonated beverage bottles. Carbonated beverages contain carbon dioxide, which will generate a certain pressure (0.2–0.3 MPa) inside the bottle during storage and transportation. The melt strength and pressure resistance of IV0.8 PET Resin are not enough to bear this pressure, which may easily lead to bottle deformation, bulging and even explosion, affecting product safety and transportation. If you need to produce CSD bottles, it is recommended to choose high-IV PET Resin with IV value of 0.82–0.88 dL/g, such as Wankai WK-881, WK-851, CZ-328, YS-C01, CR-8828, etc.

3. What are the cost advantages of IV0.8 PET Resin compared with other PET grades?

In general, PET chips IV0.8 is 5–8USD per ton cheaper than high-IV (0.82–0.88) PET Resin, and although it is 3–5USD per ton more expensive than low-IV (0.72–0.78) PET Resin.

4. How does the moisture content of IV0.8 PET Chips affect the processing quality?

If the moisture content of IV0.8 PET chips is too high, it will cause hydrolysis degradation of PET during processing, leading to a decrease in IV value, poor melt fluidity, and defects such as bubbles, cracks and uneven thickness of the finished product. In addition, excessive moisture will also increase the acetaldehyde content of the water bottles, affecting food safety.

5. Do the color values (L*, b*) of IV0.8 PET chips significantly affect the appearance of water bottles?

Yes, they have a significant impact. When L* (whiteness) ≥ 83, the water bottles is highly transparent and free of yellowing, suitable for transparent packaging. If L* < 80, the finished product may appear cloudy or grayish, affecting visual appeal and unsuitable for high-end packaging. When b* (yellowness) ≤ 1.0, the finished product is purer. If b* > 1.5, yellowing may occur due to impurities in the raw materials, overheating during processing, or degradation.

6. Is IV0.8 PET Resin suitable for hot-fill bottles?

IV0.8 PET Resin is suitable for low-temperature hot-fill packaging, such as hot-fill tea drinks and fruit juices. For high-temperature hot-fill packaging (filling temperature ≥90℃), it is not recommended. Because its heat resistance and pressure resistance are not enough to bear the high temperature and pressure during hot filling, which may lead to bottle deformation and leakage.
