What Is Sulfamic Acid

Sulfamic acid is an organic solid acid formed by replacing the hydroxyl group of sulfate with an amino group. Sulphamic acid can be made into extremely pure crystals that are stable at room temperature. Its aqueous solution has the same strong acidity as hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid. So it is also known as solid sulfuric acid. Sulfamic acid powder is a bifunctional substance with amino and sulfonic acid groups and can carry out many chemical reactions related to it.

As a relatively indispensable fine chemical product in life, sulfamic acid is mainly used in various industrial equipment cleaning agents for metal and ceramic manufacturing, oil well treatment agents and cleaning agents, electroplating industrial agents, and electrochemical polishing agents, asphalt emulsifiers, etchants, sulfonating agents for dyes, pharmaceuticals and pigment industries, dyeing agents, high-efficiency bleaching agents, fiber and paper flame retardants, softeners, resin cross-linking accelerators, herbicides, anti-blight reagents and standard analytical reagents in various industrial fields.

Applications of Sulfamic Acid Cleaner

Sulfamic acid cleaner is widely used and can be used to clean boilers, condensers, heat exchangers, jackets and chemical pipelines.

In breweries, use it to remove scale from glass-lined tanks, pots, open beer coolers, and beer kegs.

Clean evaporators in enamel factories, equipment in paper mills, etc.

In terms of air conditioning, it can remove rust and scale from the cooling system and evaporative condenser.

It can be used on sea vessels to remove algae and scale in seawater evaporators (distillation equipment), heat exchangers and brine heaters.

Clean scale from copper kettles, radiators, dishwashing mechanisms, silverware, toilet bowls, ceramic tiles, food and milk processing equipment.

It can remove protein deposits on cookers and sterilizers used in fresh meat, vegetable and cheese processing plants.

For descaling equipment, a 10% sulfamic acid solution can be used. It is safe on steel, iron, glass and wood equipment and can be used with caution on copper, aluminum and galvanized metal surfaces.

For boiler systems and cooling towers, use a recirculation treatment of 10% to 15% sulphamic acid solution, depending on the severity of the system. Flush the system and refill it with clean water before applying. Determine the volume of water and mix sulfamic acid powder in a ratio of 100 to 150 grams per liter of water. Circulate solution at room temperature or heat up to 60°C for heavier cleaning.

Note: Do not use at boiling point, otherwise the product will hydrolyze and become ineffective. Rinse and inspect the system after thorough cleaning. For heavily contaminated systems, repeated applications may be required. The system needs to be flushed regularly after cleaning to remove loose scale and contaminants. Use a 10%-20% solution to remove rust.

What Is Sulfamic Acid Powder Used in Industrial Fields

Textile Industry

Sulfamic acid can be used as an eliminator for excess nitrite in the diazotization reaction in the dye industry, a fixative for textile dyeing, and can form a fireproof layer on textiles. It can also be used to make yarn cleaners and other auxiliaries in the textile industry.

Paper Industry

Sulfamic acid can be sued as a bleaching auxiliary, which can reduce or eliminate the catalytic effect of heavy metal ions in the bleaching solution, thereby ensuring the quality of the bleaching solution. It can also reduce the oxidative degradation of fibers by metal ions and prevent the peeling reaction of fibers, improve pulp strength and whiteness.

Oil Industry

Sulphamic acid powder can be used to unblock the oil layer and increase the permeability of the oil layer. Because sulfamic acid easily reacts with the oil rock, injecting sulfamic acid solution into the carbonate rock oil-producing layer can avoid the deposition of salts formed by the reaction.  The treatment cost is slightly higher than using hydrochloric acid, but the oil production is doubled.

In Agriculture

Sulfamate and ammonium sulfamate were originally developed as herbicides. They are said to act as pesticides when applied directly to plants. Sulfamic acid can adjust soil PH value and provide the nitrogen source needed by plants. Alkaline soil usually has a higher PH value. Sulfamic acid can act as an acidic compound that can lower the PH value of the soil by reacting with the alkaline ions in the alkaline soil, making ti closer to neutral or acidic, so as to provide a suitable growing environment.

Used as Plating Solution

Sulfamic acid is commonly used when plating gold or alloys. Alkali metal sulfamte, ammonium sulfamate or sulfamate can be used as conductive and buffering compounds in new aqueous gold plating solutions.

Used in chemical synthesis analysis

In organic synthesis, sulfamic acid is a solid acid with excellent performance of cheap, good stability and easy to obtain. It has a good catalytic effect on acidic esterification reactions and doesn’t corrode equipment. At the same time, it is also a raw material for the manufacture of synthetic sweeteners, herbicides, flame retardants, preservatives, etc.
