PP Raffia

What Is PP Raffia Material

PP Raffia refers to homo polypropylene plastic resins with a melt flow index of about 2-5. Polypropylene Raffia grade, as a special category of PP material, has become an ideal choice for woven bags, ropes, decorative materials and other products due to its high tensile strength, low shrinkage and unique fiberization characteristics.

PP raffia granules, due to its non-polar nature, has a higher dielectric coefficient and higher thermal insulation properties. It can be used in the production of sacks, rope, gelatin, garden furniture, large bags, yarn and medical materials. The most widespread use of pp raffia is fiber and is also used in the production of sacks and curtains.

Polypropylene raffia has a density of 0.90 to 0.91 g/cm3 and is particularly suitable for rope production. It can be used in fisheries, fish farms, yachting and marine equipment, industry, agriculture, construction and sports equipment. In addition, it is highly resistant to sunlight and contains some UV additives.

Excellent Characteristics of Polypropylene Raffia Granules

High tensile strength and toughness. Through the directional stretching process, the molecular chains of PP raffia are highly oriented, and the tensile strength can reach 35~50MPa, which is much higher than ordinary PP particles, and is suitable for manufacturing woven products that need to withstand high tension.

Low shrinkage and dimensional stability. After adding nucleating agents and modifiers, its thermal shrinkage can be controlled below 1.5%, ensuring that the product is not easily deformed in high temperature environments and is suitable for outdoor use.

Excellent spinnability. The melt index is usually 2~8g/10min (230℃/2.16kg), which balances fluidity and fiber forming ability, and can be made into fibers that imitate natural Raffia effects through the drawing process.

Environmental protection and weather resistance. Some models can improve weather resistance by adding anti-UV additives, and the PP material itself can be recycled, which meets the needs of sustainable development.

Main application fields of PP Raffia

I. Packaging industry

Used in the manufacture of woven bags and ton bags. Raffia-grade polypropylene particles have high tensile strength (35~50MPa) and wear resistance, and can carry heavier items. After modification with UV stabilizers, the outdoor service life of this woven bag can reach 3~5 years.

Strapping and buffer net sleeves. The unidirectional stretching process increases the longitudinal strength to ≥60MPa, and the breaking strength of PET strapping is 25~30MPa.

Foamed PP net sleeve. Used for fruit transportation, the buffering performance is better than EPS foam and is recyclable.

II. Textile and decoration field

Home decoration. Woven carpets, curtains, etc. IKEA’s ORTFYLLD series uses recycled PP raffia fibers.

Gift packaging. Some Hermès gift box straps use bio-based PP raffia, which increases tear resistance by 30%.

Add antimicrobial agents for woven hats and hand baskets.

Blended with PLA to make degradable fashion items.

III. Agriculture and horticulture

Agricultural covering film. Strong UV resistance, low light transmittance, can suppress weeds, and has a service life of 5 to 8 years. Photoconverters can be added to convert UV to red light to promote crop growth.

Ropes. PP ropes for fishing boats have better buoyancy than nylon, and the strength retention rate after 2 years of seawater immersion is >80%.

Bird-proof nets. The flexibility of raffia-grade PP reduces bird damage.

â…£. Functional engineering materials

Geotextiles and reinforcement materials. The puncture resistance is ≥400N and can be used for highway subgrade isolation layers. After asphalt impregnation, it can be used for roof waterproofing membranes.

Temporary buildings and decorations. 3D printed raffia PP sheets can be used for exhibition hall partitions, which are both light-transmitting and flame-retardant. The reinforcement ribs of earthquake-resistant disaster relief tents are 70% lighter than steel frames.

â…¤. Automotive and transportation fields

Interior parts

Mineral-filled raffia PP can be used for door panel frames, with a bending modulus of ≥2.5GPa.

Combined with hemp fiber to prepare seat back panels.

Logistics carriers

The foldable PP plastic pallet with honeycomb structure design has a load-bearing capacity of 1.5 tons and is resistant to low temperatures of -30℃, which can be used in cold chain logistics.

FAQs of PP Raffia Resin

1. What is the typical melt flow rate (MFR) for raffia grade PP resin?

Raffia grade polypropylene typically has a melt flow rate ranging from 2 to 5 g/10 min (230℃/2.16 kg). This range provides a good balance between processability and mechanical strength during tape extrusion and stretching operations.

A lower MFR generally results in higher molecular weight and stronger tapes after drawing, which is important for woven bags and ropes. Manufacturers carefully control the MFR to ensure consistent extrusion performance, uniform tape thickness, and stable stretching behavior in high-speed production lines.

2. Raffia grade PP VS injection grade PP

The main difference lies in their processing methods and molecular structure design. Raffia grade PP resin is optimized for extrusion and stretching, which requires higher molecular weight and stronger orientation performance to produce durable tapes.

Injection grade PP resin, on the other hand, is designed for injection molding processes such as containers, caps, and household products. It usually has a higher melt flow rate to ensure easier mold filling. Because of these differences, injection grade PP can not perform well in tape drawing processes, while raffia grade PP is not suitable for most injection molding applications.

3. Raffia grade PP VS fiber grade PP

Raffia grade PP is optimized for tape extrusion and stretching processes used in woven bags, ropes, and geotextiles. It typically has moderate melt flow rate and excellent tensile strength after orientation.

Fiber grade PP, on the other hand, is used for producing staple fibers, nonwoven fabrics, and textiles. It usually requires different rheological properties to support fiber spinning processes. Therefore, although both materials are polypropylene, their processing characteristics and applications are quite different.

4. What factors should be considered when purchasing raffia grade PP resin?

When purchasing raffia grade polypropylene resin, several key factors should be evaluated to ensure it meets production requirements. The most important parameters include melt flow rate (MFR), tensile strength, isotactic index, and processing stability. These properties directly affect tape extrusion performance and the strength of woven products.

In addition, buyers should consider product consistency, supplier reliability, packaging options, and logistics support. For large-scale woven bag manufacturers, stable quality and long-term supply are especially critical to maintain efficient production and reduce downtime.

5. Is PP raffia suitable for food packaging bags?

Yes, polypropylene raffia resin can be used in food packaging applications when produced according to food-grade standards. Many woven bags used for rice, flour, sugar, and grains are made from raffia grade PP resin.

However, the resin must comply with food contact regulations such as FDA or EU standards, and the additives used in the production process must also meet safety requirements. In addition, proper manufacturing practices are required to ensure that the final woven bags remain safe for food storage and transportation.
