What is PET Resin IV 84?
PET Resin IV 84 or IV 0.84 refers to polyethylene terephthalate (PET) polymer with an intrinsic viscosity of 0.84 dL/g. PET IV 84 is engineered for applications that require higher structural integrity, pressure resistance, and thermal stability than standard packaging-grade PET. Most commercial IV 84 grades PET chips comply with FDA, EU 10/2011, and other global food-contact regulations, making them widely suitable for food, beverage, and sensitive packaging applications. Â

What Are Main Applications of PET Resin IV 84
Carbonated soft drink (CSD) bottles
This is the largest and most typical use for IV 0.84 PET. It provides excellent internal pressure resistance to hold carbon dioxide without deformation, making it ideal for 200mL up to 2L bottles for soda, sparkling water, and beer.Â
Edible oil containers
Widely used for 1L to 5L bottles for vegetable oil, olive oil, and cooking oil. It offers strong oil barrier properties, good impact resistance, and stability during handling and transportation.Â
Large-format and heavy-duty containers
Used for 3L to 5L water bottles, large food jars, and industrial packaging. It delivers excellent top-load strength and rigidity while allowing relatively thinner wall sections.
APET sheets and thermoformed products
Extruded into clear APET sheets for thermoformed trays, clamshell packaging, food containers, and retail display components.
Cosmetic and personal care packaging
Used for shampoo, shower gel, lotion, and detergent bottles due to its high clarity, gloss, and resistance to many surfactants and cosmetic ingredients.
What Are Performance Advantages of PET Resin IV 84
Higher mechanical strength
Compared with IV 0.76–0.80 PET resins, PET IV 84 provides noticeably higher tensile strength, impact resistance, and crack resistance, reducing breakage in production, transport, and daily use.
Excellent pressure and creep resistance
Longer polymer chains deliver outstanding resistance to creep and internal pressure, which is critical for carbonated drinks to maintain bottle shape and prevent bulging over long shelf life.
Strong thermal stability
Performs reliably in hot-fill and pasteurization environments. It maintains dimensional stability and minimizes haze formation at elevated temperatures.
High clarity and low acetaldehyde
Commercial IV 0.84 PET chips are designed for crystal transparency and low AA content (generally below 1.0 ppm), avoiding taste or odor contamination in food and beverage products.
Food safety and regulatory compliance
Fully compliant with major global food-contact standards. BPA-free and non-toxic.
Broad chemical resistance
Resistant to oils, fats, alcohols, dilute acids, and many household and cosmetic chemicals, supporting use beyond beverages.
FAQs of IV0.84 PET Resin
1. What is the main difference between PET IV 84 and IV 80?
PET IV 84 has a higher molecular weight than IV 80, offering better pressure resistance, thermal stability, and mechanical strength. IV 80 PET chips is more fluid and easier to process but less durable, typically used for water bottles.
2. Is PET IV 84 safe for food contact?
Yes. Reputable IV 84 PET grades comply with FDA, EU, and other food-contact regulations. They are non-toxic, BPA-free, and have low acetaldehyde levels to avoid flavor contamination.
3. Why is PET IV 84 the standard for CSDÂ bottles?
Carbonated drinks create high internal pressure. PET chips with IV 84 provides the necessary creep resistance and pressure stability to maintain bottle shape and preserve carbonation.
4. Does a higher IV affect bottle clarity?
Modern IV 0.84 PET resin are specially formulated for high transparency. With proper processing parameters, they produce crystal-clear bottles with minimal haze.
5. Can I replace PET IV 84 with a lower-IV grade to reduce cost?
Generally not recommended. Lower-IV resins lack the required strength and pressure resistance, which can lead to defective products, higher rejection rates, and safety risks.
